About our founder and our Administrative team

Debi Ruud (founder)

Debi has a true passion for music. She started Fresno Music Academy & Arts in 1998 after earning her degree in vocal performance from Fresno State. Originally called ‘The Voice Shop’, she and several others taught voice lessons out of her home. Today, we have over 30 highly qualified teachers that Debi has personally interviewed/hired, who all are ready to help you become the musician of your dreams!

Debi has been teaching privately for many years, and has been singing professionally in the Fresno area for over 25 years. She has sung in numerous groups, such as the Joe Lenigan band, Papa Clutch and The Shifters, and her own Jazz trio. She has been active in musical theater with Good Company Players at Roger Rocka's Dinner Theater & 2nd Space Theatre, and other independent productions, as well as being a very active part of the music ministry for many churches, formerly directing the choir at Bethel Lutheran. Debi's voice has graced many albums, including her own, Tell the World, Almost There, and a Christmas album "At Long Last Christmas" recorded with Fresno tenor Bob Bergthold. Debi is constantly performing locally at both group projects and private events. Her voice can be heard on countless jingles and commercials in the Central Valley.

Debi, the teachers, and staff at Fresno Music Academy & Arts teach over 400 students every week, helping each of them reach new heights in creative expression!

“I’m just happy and grateful to be here, making music and spreading love to our community through the gift of music and the arts.” - Debi

Frequently Asked Questions

A woman with braided hair is helping a boy with short dark hair learn to play an acoustic guitar. The boy is seated on a wooden chair, and the woman is leaning over, guiding his hand on the guitar's fretboard. They are in a cozy, rustic room with a concrete wall background.
  • That question is often asked by prospective students. The answer is that our teachers make it a priority to get to know you on a personal level and to become familiar with your personal musical needs and goals. We do not treat every student the same in terms of what and how we teach. A seven year old having their first guitar lesson will have very different needs than a fifty seven year old taking up piano for the 2nd time after having had lessons as a child. The main reason to choose Fresno Music Academy & Arts as your music lesson provider, is that we are sensitive to the fact that every student is an individual. If you enroll here for lessons, we will work with you to make a plan that will fit your needs and musical preferences. At the first lesson your teacher will ask you about your favorite type of music, set goals to help accomplish whatever musical aspirations you have for yourself or your child.

  • You can enroll by contacting us directly by clicking here, or calling us, or by visiting the academy in person. We’ll help you schedule a trial lesson and pair you with the right instructor based on your goals and experience.

  • While it's helpful to have your own instrument for practice at home, we can provide recommendations for rentals or purchases. Some instruments may be available for use during lessons.
